Never Fail Rolls



Today, I am sharing a recipe that comes from a recipe book my Grandma used all the time.  It is one of my favorite cookbooks (Kansas Kountry Kitchens from 1987), because every once in a while I come across  little notes on her favorite recipes.  I just love seeing her handwriting! :)  . 



While looking for a yeast roll recipe for my husband I came across this one:

Never Fail Rolls

3/4 c. milk                                            3/4 c. warm water
1/4 c. sugar                                          1 pkg. yeast
2 1/2 tsp. salt                                       4 1/4 c. flour
4 1/2 Tbsp oil       

Directions:
Heat milk, sugar, salt and oil; cool to lukewarm (I actually did this in microwave).  Put warm water in bowl; sprinkle with yeast and let dissolve (about 5 minutes and this should be a large bowl).  Stir in lukewarm milk mixture.  Add 2 1/4 cups sifted flour.  Beat until smooth (did this in mixer).  Stir in additional flour (approximately 2 cups). 

Turn out on lightly floured board.  Knead until smooth and elastic, then place in a greased bowl.  Cover with shortening and then cover with a towel.  Let rise until doubled in bulk (about an hour).  Punch down and turn out on lightly floured board.  Knead and put in desired roll shapes. Bake at 375 for 12 minutes.  Watch them though, because recipe didn't actually say time or degree to cook (weird).

This was the strangest recipe, because it wasn't specific about anything (I added some notes).  I was so worried about them not turning out, but they were pretty great and my husband loved them.  So I guess that means they truly are Never Fail or lets hope!

Note: This recipe won purple ribbons at the Kansas State Fair for 7 years in a row!!

PS:  I plan on making these for Thanksgiving !!

Yummy! This sounds a lot like a recipe my grandma uses for rolls! I'm going to have to try it!
